How to use this calculator
Enter a start and end time to find their difference. For overnight intervals, select Next day. Use dates when an interval spans more than one day.
The calculation, explained
The tool subtracts the start clock time from the end clock time, adding 24 hours for each day crossed. It subtracts unpaid breaks when entered. It measures nominal clock time and does not adjust for daylight-saving changes or time zones.
09:00 to 17:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes. With a 30-minute unpaid break, the result is 8 hours, or 8.00 decimal hours.
Common questions
Can I calculate an overnight shift?
Yes. Enter 22:00 and 06:00, then select Next day. The difference is 8 hours before any unpaid break.
What happens on a daylight-saving change?
The result follows the clock values you enter, not actual elapsed time. For work crossing a clock change, check the elapsed duration separately.
