How to use this calculator
Convert a time duration to decimal hours, or a decimal-hour value back to hours and minutes. This is useful when a time record and a spreadsheet use different formats.
The calculation, explained
To get decimal hours, divide minutes by 60 and add whole hours. To reverse it, multiply decimal hours by 60 and round to the nearest whole minute. The displayed decimal precision does not change the original entered minutes.
7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. By contrast, 7.45 decimal hours equals 7 hours 27 minutes.
Common questions
Why is 30 minutes 0.50 hours?
An hour has 60 minutes, so 30 ÷ 60 = 0.50. The digits after the decimal are fractions of an hour.
Can rounding change my total?
Yes. Add exact minutes before converting when possible. Repeatedly adding rounded decimal values can introduce small differences.
